The temple was established in 1981 by the late Mr. N Reghunatha Menon, a notable and devout individual from the town of Kalamassery. For an extended period, the temple functioned as a basic concrete structure, containing only the shrines of Ganapathy, Subramanian, and the Navagrahas. In 2000, Menon initiated a project to construct additional shrines for various Gods and Goddesses, as well as to renovate the temple in accordance with traditional architectural styles. Menon passed away the following year, after which the temple's management was entrusted to his children. They continued the renovation efforts and established the Mahaganapathy Temple Trust to oversee the temple's operations. Currently, the temple serves as a highly frequented place of worship for residents of Kalamassery and its surroundings, hosting numerous festivals and events throughout the year.
The temple features a straightforward design, with the original shrines of Ganapathy and Subramanian (Kartikeya), along with the Navagraha, situated within two adjacent concrete structures facing west.
Between these two shrines lies a staircase that leads to a more recently constructed elevated structure, which contains the shrines of additional deities. These shrines, added in 2000, are dedicated to Shiva, Parvathi, Rama, Dakshinamurthi, and Chandikeshwara.
The entire temple complex spans approximately 5,000 square feet and lacks outer walls. A Peepal tree is positioned in front of the Ganapathy shrine, and the complex includes a ground area behind the building.
